+It is standard practice to update to the latest Lenovo EC firmware before replacing the stock BIOS on Thinkpads. **However**, as a result of CVE-2019-6171, newer Lenovo firmware update files have been digitally signed. Please note that if you upgrade to a locked version, you will not be able to patch your EC without downgrading it. This is not the desired outcome, as it will prevent you from making changes to the EC firmware, for example with the [[https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec|thinkpad-ec]] tool. Recommendation is to flash the last modifieable EC firmware version.
